Iowa vs. Penn State, 10/12/19

A high-risk ultrasound during pregnancy revealed that something was wrong with Gabby’s heart. Her mother was sent to University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital for a fetal echocardiogram, which led to a diagnosis of hypoplastic right heart syndrome with pulmonary atresia, a congenital heart defect where the right side of heart is underdeveloped.

After Gabby was born at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, she was taken immediately to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Just seven days after birth, Gabby underwent an open heart surgery. Since then, she has undergone two more open heart surgeries, numerous trips to the pediatric catheterization lab, two corrective eye surgeries, and many other procedures. Congenital heart disease is a lifelong journey, but Gabby continues to thrive and defy the odds.
