Aerodigestive and Tracheostomy Clinic

Your child deserves to be treated as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms or problems. At the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital Aerodigestive and Tracheostomy Clinic, we always focus on a holistic, individualized approach when caring for your child.

Our clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and management of complex airway and swallowing disorders.

For children with tracheostomy our goal is to provide a pathway for decannulation—the removal of the tracheostomy tube.

Iowa’s only multidisciplinary clinic for complex airway and swallowing disorders

Our program is multidisciplinary, which means that your child’s treatment is provided by a team of experts from various medical disciplines who work together to provide the most advanced, most comprehensive care.

Instead of making multiple appointments to see all of these experts, you make a single appointment, and each member of the care team is there to visit with your child.

Multidisciplinary management is especially important for tracheostomized children. It improves communication and our ability to diagnose and manage problems.

Your child’s care team includes otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, and speech-language pathologists, all specially trained to care for children.

Evaluation of your child

We use triple endoscopies, which involve coordination of endoscopic evaluation of the airway and gastrointestinal tract, to avoid putting children under multiple types of anesthesia.

After the evaluation, the multidisciplinary team meets to develop a strategy for managing your child’s care.
