Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Young Child Clinic

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Young Child Clinic at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital cares for children from ages 2 to 4 who are experiencing:

  • Anxiety
  • Attachment problems
  • Inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity
  • Family separations and losses
  • History of maltreatment or trauma
  • Irritability
  • Mood problems
  • Oppositional behavior

As a parent, you are a vital part of your child’s mental health care team, and you are a partner as we explore the best treatment options for your child.

Before an appointment is scheduled, we would prefer hearing from you or your child’s doctor to determine if our care is the right fit for you and your child. For confidentiality reasons, we ask that you inquire by phone.

Our team typically meets with you and your child in a series of three weekly appointments. Each appointment will last about two hours.

  • First, we’ll review medical records and ask you some questions about your child.
  • Typically, during the second meeting, we’ll complete some psychological testing and observe your child’s behavior.
  • During our third visit, we will share our findings and make recommendations for next steps, including any follow-up care to be provided through our services or resources in your community.
