Chronic pain – pain that is persistent – can affect individuals of any age. 

University of Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to Iowa’s only pediatric comprehensive pain services. The team of pediatric specialists includes a doctor, nurse practitioner, nurse, psychologist, social worker, and physical therapist, all specially trained to help children and young adults through age 21 with chronic pain.Our team partners with your child and family to provide a comprehensive, holistic, and individualized approach to pain management. 

Our team focuses not only on treatment for pain, but also on the source of the pain and your child’s overall well-being, including:

  • Alternative and integrative medicine
  • Evidence-based treatments using medication and minimally invasive procedures 
  • Physical therapy
  • Psychological support

Pain can impact many parts of your child’s life, including:

While pain may not go away completely, it often can be reduced to a manageable level. Our team works with your child and family to help your child maintain a healthy lifestyle and achieve their personal goals.

    Parking:

    The entrance to the Pediatric Specialty Clinic (PSC) is near the Level 2 connector bridge that links UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital to University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The recommended path to the PSC is:

    • Park in Parking Ramp 2
    • Take Elevator South in Parking Ramp 2 and push the “G” (ground floor) button
    • Take a left to enter Level 1 (Gerdin Family Lobby) of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital
    • Take the public elevators near the information desk to Level 2.
    • Arrive on Level 2. Take a left and cross the short connector bridge. 
    • The entrance to the PSC will be on your left.
