Thanks for your interest in covering “the wave”. The Press Box on Level 12 of University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital allows patients and families to enjoy many events, including “tailgate parties” during football season. The Press Box has a maximum capacity of 81 people and those spaces are quickly filled with pediatric patients and families.
As you can understand, our patients and their families come first, so to accommodate the continued interest from media, we have created a set of guidelines and request form to ensure a great experience for everyone.

  • Media interested in filming inside the children’s hospital Press Box must submit their request via the form below  no later than noon the Thursday before the desired game, or by noon the Wednesday before a Friday game.
  • Please note: submitting this form does not guarantee your request will be granted. Please read through the guidelines below, and we look forward to talking with you about your request.

Guidelines

Limited Number of Visitors

  • Media presence in the Press Box will be limited to two (2) broadcast teams of no more than two people each, and one (1) print media representative. In circumstances in which several outlets express interest, University of Iowa Health Care reserves the right to select which media will be granted access to the Press Box with the understanding that each media outlet is willing to serve as a “pool” source for other interested outlets.

Patient Safety

  • All members of the media in the Press Box or in patient rooms on levels 9, 10, or 11, must comply with the hospital’s health guidelines for visitors.
  • Good hand hygiene is vital to patient safety. Wash your hands often - before, during, and after your visit.

Consent

  • Families who have consented to be filmed will be wearing a green sticker with the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital logo. Only those patients/family members wearing a green sticker may be filmed.

Timing

  • The Press Box will open for patients and families 30 minutes prior to kickoff. Broadcast media may request early access to position a camera in the window, but must vacate the floor one hour prior to kickoff for a security sweep.
  • Media can stay in the Press Box until the conclusion of the wave at the end of the first quarter.

Respect and Consideration

  • Media are reminded that the event in the Press Box is for patients and their families. Please do not hinder a patient’s ability to view Kinnick Stadium.
  • Complete your request for media coverage
  • Representatives from University of Iowa Health Care Marketing and Communications will respond to all requests by 5 p.m. Thursday prior to each home game.

Background

On Sept. 2, 2017, more than 70,000 Hawkeye fans turned to the east at the end of the first quarter of the Iowa Hawkeyes’ season opener and waved to patients and families in the nearby University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The patients and families all waved back.

Social media fans and the sports and news media were quick to pick up on “the wave,” and it quickly became known as “the best new tradition in college football.”

Thanks again for your interest in helping tell the stories of the children and their families being cared for at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
