Organ and Tissue Transplantation
When an organ transplant is necessary for children and adolescents with life-threatening illnesses, knowledge, experience, and outcomes are key.
University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to a dedicated team of highly skilled specialists who perform heart, kidney, and liver transplant procedures for young patients. Members of the multidisciplinary care team—surgeons, physician specialists, anesthesiologists, nurses, pharmacists, child-life specialists, therapists, technologists, social work specialists, and support staff—work collaboratively with families to deliver seamless care with outstanding results.
We recognize that transplant surgery is an ongoing physical and emotional journey for patients and their families. In addition to state-of-the-art medical and surgical care, our approach emphasizes dignity and respect, information sharing, participation, and collaboration involving both the child and the family—beginning before transplant procedure and continuing throughout the first year and beyond.
It’s the type of care families expect at one of the nation’s top academic medical centers. It’s the type of care patients at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital receive.
