We know you have much on your mind as you prepare for your visit. To make the experience as comfortable as possible for you and your loved one in our care, University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital offers a variety of services to support patients, families, and their visitors during their time at the hospital and in the surrounding community.

New hospital visitor screenings and restrictions

To protect the health of our patients and their families, we are limiting the number of public entrances to our hospital. Additionally, patients and visitors entering the hospital will be screened for symptoms of the flu and COVID-19. These include: fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

You will not be permitted to enter if you exhibit signs of an influenza-like illness. We will have designated staff at entrances to guide you through this process.

We limit the number of visitors per pediatric patient at all of our patient care facilities.

  • Pediatric inpatients (admitted to the hospital for an extended stay), surgical, and procedural patients: Two parents or legal guardians are now allowed per patient per day.
  • Emergency Department: One visitor/support person per patient is allowed.
  • Labor and Delivery Unit: Two visitors/support people (plus a doula) are allowed per patient. The visitor/support person must wear a face mask at all times and remain with the patient or in a designated waiting area as much as possible.
  • Pediatric outpatients (arriving for a clinic visit, then returning home): Two adult visitors/support persons are allowed.
    • For patients aged 18 and older, no visitors/support persons are allowed at this time.
  • For newborn visits (2 months of age or less): Two parents or legal guardians will be allowed to attend.
